The Healthcare system in Canada includes a wide variety of roles that contribute to the quality of healthcare Canadians receive. Working as a coordinator for Canadian Blood Services, I play a much different role in the Canadian Healthcare System than most of the other people in this class. My role is about the delivery of essential healthcare supplies. Canada is recognized as having one of the safest blood supplies in the world. Blood and blood products are considered biopharmaceuticals; therefore, they must be manufactured following strict federal regulations (Canadian Blood Services, 2020). Part of my role is to make sure that donors, employees, and volunteers adhere to all rules and regulations to provide Canadian hospitals and, in-turn, Canadian patients with life-saving products.
As an organization, Canadian Blood Services works to operate the stem cell and bone marrow network, building and operating the Canadian Blood Services Cord Blood bank, managing the national system for organ transplant and donation, providing Canadians with Plasma, platelet, and whole blood products, and conducting transfusion and transplantation research nationally and internationally (Canadian Blood Services, 2020). We are funded by the provincial and territorial ministers of health and host various national and regional liaison committees where patient groups, medical experts, and the public provide prospective and feedback (Canadian Blood Services, 2020). We are also accountable to Health Canada by subjecting ourselves to regular audits by auditors from Health Canada. Since Health Canada regulates the organization, they have full power to make any changes they may see fit if the audit does not go well (Canadian Blood Services, 2020). For example, I recently had an auditor come into one of my downtown Toronto clinics and recommended we make changes to one of our online platforms; after being discussed between Health Canada and our board of directors, the change was enforced.
Although Health Canada as a whole regulates Canadian Blood Services, we have Registered Nurses who work within our clinics that are accountable to their own provincial and federal groups.
